Description

Some children are hardest on themselves.

Petal is one of them. When she and her twin brother Pip move to a new house at the start of a new school year, Pip finds his footing fast: a soccer team, a knot of friends, a place that already fits. Petal is still looking for hers.

So the twins build one. A house of their own, made from moving boxes, cut and taped into something proud and patchwork and theirs. And then, in a hard moment, Petal breaks it.

The Second House is about what happens next. Not the mistake, but the repair. A bigger box arrives. Petal starts again, alone this time, and builds something stronger than the first. Her brother comes back. The second house is better than the first, on purpose, together.

Who It’s For

Recommended for ages 3–10.

The Story and Its Message

The Second House follows Petal and Pip, twin pigs who move somewhere new just as the school year begins. Pip lands on his feet. Petal doesn’t, not yet. The story moves through the ordinary ache of being the one still looking for a place: a new desk, a full team she isn’t on, an afternoon that won’t turn into home.

The twins build a house from moving boxes. It breaks. And the book does its real work in what comes after, when Petal, alone, builds it again, bigger and stronger, and her brother returns to a house that held.

There are no villains here. There is a hard feeling, a broken thing, and a child who learns that she can be the one who fixes it. The second house is better than the first. That is the most hopeful thing you can hand a child who just did something wrong.
